Tryptophan in piglet feeds more attractive than ever
The price of tryptophan amino acid has recently dropped significantly. This makes it even more attractive than before to increase the SID TRP/LYS ratio in piglet feeds from 20% to 22%. Our own calculations show that this increase currently costs approximately €0.27 per 100 kg of feed, while, for example, last year the cost was €0.50.
A higher tryptophan content in piglet feeds than is strictly the norm, has a positive impact on growth and health. This is because tryptophan has a positive effect on feed intake. This effect is controlled via the hormone regulation system, whereby the hormones ghrelin and serotonin play a role. In addition, tryptophan is an important amino acid for the immune system. More tryptophan is proportionately required for immunological reactions than for meat production and growth. Relatively speaking, more tryptophan is therefore required than normal in the event of disease or a heightened risk of infection. Especially these days in which a reduction in the use of antibiotics is important, proper support for resistance is a key factor. Then a proper supply of tryptophan is essential.
