A closer look at phytases

Phytase is a fixed component in the composition of pig and poultry feeds designed to increase the absorption of phosphorous contained in the raw materials used in concentrates. Various phytase products are currently registered. After carrying out in-vivo research, Schothorst Feed Research was able to conclude that the effectiveness of an E.Coli 6-phytase is generally higher than that of an Aspergillus 3-phytase.

The results of this research prompted Pre-Mervo to include MERVIT® EC-FYTASE 2345 in its product range. This pre-mix contains 150,000 FTU E-Coli 6-phytase per kg, in the form of Phyzyme XP 10000 TPT. Furthermore, Pre-Mervo has inventoried the key properties of the most relevant phytase products. This involves the products Natuphos, Phyzyme, Ronozyme NP, Finase EC and Quantum Fytase.

 Which product is of primary interest depends on several aspects:

  • The animal feeds for which the product has been registered;
  • The desired method of dosing (dry or liquid);
  • The level of dosing;
  • Matrix values;
  • Cost of the phytase.

The higher effectiveness of an E.Coli 6-phytase is not attractive from a pricing perspective in all instances. It depends on the quantity that you want to add to the feed and whether you are dosing on the basis of FTU or on the basis of the desired quantity of indigestible phosphorous (iP) and digestible phosphorous (dP) that must become available in the feed through the application of phytase.

For additional information and explanations of this inventory, please contact Pre-Mervo’s Product Development Department.

By processing phytase in a responsible way it can contribute to reducing the phosphorous content of pig feeds and consequently to the feed track covenant initiated by the feed manufactures organisation (Nevedi) and the Dutch farmers organisation (LTO).
